Arguably the greatest general of all time, Alexander the Great, claimed territory near the mouth of the Nile river. Which later became the foundation to the Lighthouse of Alexandria. After Alexander the Great's death the land was distributed amongst Macedonian leaders. One of which was a general named Ptolemy. Ptolemy granted himself the position of "ruler over Egypt". He later initiated the 12-25 yearlong construction of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The lighthouse was 130 meters tall, had the Greek sea god, Poseidon , and at the very top had a fire that never ceased to burn. After the collapse of the Lighthouse a Sultan named Kaibai created a wall to protect the port. The port was the base of Alexandria, and was considered the greatest one of its time.
